General Doodle Information

We at Groomingdale’s understand that not all doodle owners want to poodle their doodle !

With that in mind, clear communication with your groomer about what kind of clip you would like for your fur pal, is essential. A picture is worth a thousand words, so if you have a picture of what you have in mind, do share!

Because coat type and texture are as varied as the types of doodles, there is no one ‘ standard’ clip for them, no matter what the internet may tell you! Golden doodles, Labradoodles, Aussiedoodles, Bernadoodles, Sheepadoodles, Younameitdoodles, all have their own individual coat types, thereby, the different clips, styles and lengths are not a one size fits all.

Other considerations when deciding on what kind of clip you would like for your pet, besides budget, are activity level, lifestyle, specific needs, as well as available time you have to spend on home coat care. In other words…brushing and combing….lots of brushing and combing…lots…

If you and your doodle don’t have the time or the patience for daily (or at least SEVERAL times a week) brushing and combing, then a shorter, sportier, maintenance clip might be the best option. This is especially true in the spring and summer months when not only is the weather warmer (ok, HOTTER), and lots of dogs and thier people are on the go…to the lake, the beach, camping and other summertime activities, making coat maintenance more difficult. Also keep in mind that dogs will acclimate to their environment , so if you find you both prefer the shorter clips, that can safely be maintained year round . We don’t live in the tundra, so chances are pretty good that they won’t freeze to death while running out to go potty or going for a walk around the block!

’Short’ doesn’t necessarily mean ‘shaved’, although it can. Again , your groomer can discuss in great detail the actual length that will best suit your needs if you opt to go short. Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as a ‘puppy cut’ outside the poodle breed, and is literally a simple clip done for puppies. In the current grooming vernacular, however, ’puppy cut’ just refers to the same length all over the body, that length being determined by your personal preference and your dogs’ coat condition
